Shrikshetra Mahotsav at Puri
The Sahi Yatra or the street-play of Puri, the pilgrim city is a popular festival, its partly martial but its theme is religious. The ‘Sahi Yatra’is an event in which the inhabitants of Puri mingle together and work unitedly. In true sense, Sahi Yatra is folk drama. The most attractive feature of Sahi Yatra is the grand procession that crawls through narrow and winding lanes and by-lanes of the ancient city. Many crossings on these lanes are turned into arenas by acrobats, tumblers, the Nagas, the Medhas (huge and elaborate masks) of deities and demons as the grand procession passes by. Many see silmilarity of these processions with the Ramlila of Varanasi.
Taking together all four varieties of Sahi Yatra, Shrikshetra Mahotsav is organized at Puri in the month of April-May coinciding with the popular folk festival. The festival aims at presenting the hidden glory of long living traditions of the Sahis (streets) of Puri in one platform and showcase the dramatic form of the age-old culture of Puri.
